Horse Eyes

A horse has a huge eye – twice as big as a human’s. Of all the land animals only the ostrich and the elephant have bigger eyes. Like a cat, the horse has a layer to reflect light back to the retina enabling it to see better in low light levels.

It is the size of the horse’s eye and its ability to see in the dark that points to the conclusion that the horse is a nocturnal animal. We see the domestic horse as a daytime worker and we forget its natural lifestyle, which would be most active in the dim light of dawn and dusk.
