There are many different types of horseback riding. One of the most famous type is called western riding. Western riding has been based off of the old warfare traditions and ranching methods of the Spanish Conquistadores. These Conquistadors brought their method of horse riding to America and over time it has evolved into the form of riding we know today.

The cowboys from the old American West were the most popular group of people to take up this riding method. They found that using this riding method and the equipment that was brought over from Spain made it easy for them to catch cattle without falling off their horses. Over time the equipment and the way that they rode changed a bit to make things easier for them.

The horses that the cowboys used were trained on how to ride with the equipment. They were also taught by the cowboys to use their instincts when keeping an eye on the cattle. This allowed for light rein contact between the horse and rider. This also allowed the rider to stay seated easily without fear of falling off.
